Second Chances
I was reading in Exodus 2 this morning about the time that Moses killed one of the Egyptians. Moses saw an Egyptian beating one of Moses' fellow Hebrews and took matters into his own hands. He killed the Egyptian and buried him in the sand. Perhaps one of the most amazing things about Moses' life was not coming down the mountain with the Ten Commandments or crossing the Red Sea with the rest of his people, but the fact that God still decided to use him to lead his people out of Egypt, in spite of his past. Our God specializes in second chances. There are examples after examples throughout scripture. When has God given you a second chance?

I believe that God also can use the things we do wrong to develop us for later tasks that will be given to us. Moses probably would never have gone to the desert, the place where Jesus went to fight his spiritual battles. It was the place where Moses could encounter God without diverson. Our emotional or physical "deserts" can be our redemption. The person who will never admit to having an emotional/spiritual desert is sometimes dangerous.
ReplyDeleteThis story continues to stick with me. I feel like Moses is angry at the right things...this hurt and sensitivity towards oppression led to freedom; however...I often wrestle with the balance of sensitivity towards those acting oppressively (I cannot exclude my own's hearts inclination towards this) & following the Spirit's lead in pursuing justice. I acknowledge my first tendency is towards pacifism, specifically avoiding "taking things into my own hands"...but in regards to systematic issues this gets so hard.
